Sharing family meals

International comparisons

According to the PISA study, New Zealand 15 year olds are less likely to eat main meals with their parents around a table than 15 year olds in most other developed countries.

Of 27 OECD countries in 2000, only Finland had a significantly lower proportion of students reporting this than New Zealand.

The average proportion of students sharing main meals around a table several times a week across 27 OECD countries was 78.9 percent, with a range from 60.0 percent (Finland) to 93.6 percent (Italy), compared to 64.7 percent in New Zealand.
