Inactivity

Sex differences

Among young people aged 15 to 19, inactivity rates for males and females were equal in 2004, but since then the rate for males has risen above the rate for females.

In 2007, 7.3 percent of young males aged 15 to 19 were inactive, compared with 5.8 percent of females.

Among young people aged 20 to 24, young females’ inactivity rates have decreased over the last few years as those of young males have risen.  In 2004, 7.5 percent of males and 8.5 percent of females were inactive, compared to 2007 figures of 7.9 percent and 7.6 percent respectively.
