Employment

Regional differences

Please note: Sub-national employment data is derived from Census 2006 and differs to the data presented in other parts of the "Employment" indicator (which is from the Household Labour Force Survey), as a result of the difference in the surveys’ scopes, administration methods, timing and sample size.

Youth employment rates vary across different regions of New Zealand.

The 2006 Census found that young people aged 15 to 24 were most likely to be employed in the South Island areas of Kaikoura District (77.5 percent), Queenstown-Lakes District (75.1 percent), Ashburton District (72.9 percent) and Central Otago District (72.8 percent). They were least likely to be employed in the Bay of Plenty areas of Kawerau and Opotiki (34.9 percent and 40.6 percent respectively).

South Island districts generally had higher rates of employment than North Island districts.
