Mortality
International comparisons
In 2005 New Zealand’s mortality rate for 15 to 19 year olds was higher than that of 25 of 29 selected OECD countries.
It was equal with that of Austria and Mexico, and lower only than that of the United States.
The rate for young people aged 20 to 24 in New Zealand was higher than that of 21 countries including Australia and the United Kingdom, but lower than that of Mexico and the United States.(1)
Notes
1. Derived from the United Nations Demographic Yearbook 2005 (see link at right). The Yearbook publication provides age-specific mortality rates per 100,000 to 1 decimal place only, and so there are large groupings of equally-ranked nations within the dataset.
