New Zealand 15-year-olds are similar to 15-year-olds across the OECD in terms of their sense of belonging at school.
In the 2003 PISA Study, the proportion of New Zealand 15 year olds who agreed or strongly agreed that they feel like an outsider was similar to the average across 30 OECD countries (an average of 7.3 percent, with a range from 3.8 in Spain percent to 13.8 percent in Turkey). The proportion of New Zealand 15 year olds who agreed or strongly agreed that they feel awkward or out of place at school was also similar to the OECD average (which was 10 percent, with a range from 4.9 percent in Sweden to 18 percent in Japan).
