Education resources in the home
Definition
The proportion of 15 year olds who have access to the following educational resources in their home: a dictionary, own calculator, computer, desk, internet access, school text books, quiet place to study, educational software, as reported in the 2006 Programme for Student Assessment (PISA).
Relevance
The home environment can have a significant impact on student achievement at school. Research shows that students tend to do better at school when they have access to a quiet place study at home, with a desk and other tools that support learning.
Current level and trends
In both the 2003 and 2006 PISA studies, the majority of 15 year olds reported they had access to a variety of educational resources at home.
In 2006 more than 97 percent of students reported having access to a dictionary and to their own calculator. More than 90 percent had access to a computer they could use for school work, and a quiet place to study. More than 85 percent had access to a desk to study at, to school text books, and the internet.
